The Independence Day of Brazil, commonly called Sete de Setembro, is a national holiday observed in Brazil on 7 September of every year. The date celebrates Brazil's Declaration of Independence from the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil, and the Algarves on 7 September 1822.Independence Day is a national holiday marked by patriotic displays and military parades in most Brazilian cities. In Brasília, the national celebration takes place at the Ministries Esplanade with a civil-military parade in the presence of the President of Brazil, who is Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces.
On September 7, 1822, Prince Dom Pedro declared Brazil's independence from Portugal, founding the Empire of Brazil, which led to a two-year war of independence. Formal recognition came with a treaty signed by both Brazil and Portugal in late 1825.
Brazil's independence differed from the rest of Latin America in that it was: declared and led by the Portuguese regent in Brazil, who became emperor. Leaders of Latin American independence revolts were generally: moderates, who wanted some democratic institutions but feared the masses.
It was during Loronha's tenure that the name began to transition to Terra do Brasil ("Land of Brazil") and its inhabitants to Brasileiros.
Sergipe, the smallest Estado (state) of Brazil, is located on the southern coast of that country's northeastern bulge into the Atlantic Ocean.
On May 13, 1888, Brazilian Princess Isabel of Bragança signed Imperial Law number 3,353. Although it contained just 18 words, it is one of the most important pieces of legislation in Brazilian history. Called the “Golden Law,” it abolished slavery in all its forms.
The Portuguese were more invested in evangelization and trade in Asia and Africa, which included trafficking in enslaved humans, and viewed Brazil as a trading post instead of a place to send larger numbers of settlers.
